trager

Trager is a method of therapy, similar in some ways to Feldenkrais, that combines a unique massage technique with specialized exercises, to improve mobility, relieve pain and help with injuries, developed by Dr. Milton Trager in the 1940s and ‘50s. Like Feldenkrais, it seeks to use and improve neural communication between the body and brain.

A session of Trager typically lasts for about an hour, and consists of a discussion about the problem, after which the practitioner uses gentle rocking movements of the affected body part as he or she discusses the sensations thus created with the patient, during which the practitioner enters a kind of meditative state to improve concentration and sensitivity to the movements of the patient’s body. At the end of the session, the patient is taught exercises called “mentastics” (from mental gymnastics) to be used at home for further work on the problem.

Trager is useful for treatment of old injuries, as well as for people with diseases that cause movement problems such as muscular dystrophy or multiple sclerosis. It is not a treatment for the actual disease, however, and Trager practitioners always recommend seeing a doctor before using Trager.
