shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese technique that developed from Chinese acupressure. It arises from a similar belief in Qi (chee), or the life energy that flows through the body along channels called meridians, which are accessible through specific points on the body called acupoints, all of which are also associated with particular organs and other parts of the body.

Disturbances, imbalances, or blockages in the flow of Qi are believed to be the cause of illness. But unlike acupressure, which attempts to find and manipulate the particular acupoint which can reach the source of the problem, Shiatsu is a systematic massage of all of the acupoints, to completely correct, restore or invigorate the entire Qi.

It was developed by Tokujiro Naimkoshi in the 1920s and has since been refined by a number of other practitioners, and is now used to treat illnesses from stress to back and neck pain to digestive disorders and many others.
