reiki

Reiki is a relatively new Japanese form of therapy, similar to other energy medicines such as acupuncture and healing touch, but different from them in that it incorporates a spiritual element, holding that the healing is actually performed by a power outside either the patient or the healer.

It was created in the late 1800s and early 1900s by Dr. Mikao Usui, who studied ancient healing practices of Tibetan monks and then believed that he was given the power to heal with Reiki during a session of meditation.

Ki is the Japanese equivalent of the Chinese Qi (chee), the life energy that flows through all living things and is essential to health and vitality, and Rei is the conscious higher power that is the source of Ki. Imbalances in the flow of Ki, often caused by negative thoughts or emotions, are considered the cause of many health problems.

A Reiki practitioner does not manipulate the Ki of the patient directly, but rather acts as a channel through which Ki flows from and is controlled by the higher power, to balance or clear any blockages in the flow of energy. Reiki has been used to treat a very wide variety of conditions, from stress and pain to cancer.
