qi gong

Qi Gong is probably the oldest traditional Chinese energy therapy, dating from as early as 1700 B.C. Based on the theory of Qi (chee) or life energy, which flows through the body along channels known as meridians, the technique combines particular breathing patterns with a technique of energy manipulation by a Qi Gong healer, similar to acupressure or healing touch, to attempt to balance the flow of Qi, clear any blockages in its flow, or to make up deficits of Qi by a direct transfer of energy from the healer to the patient. Since the proper flow of energy is believed to be essential to health, any problems with it are said to be causes of or factors in practically any health problem; therefore Qi Gong is considered beneficial not only to overall vitality but also potentially an aid to fighting diseases from colds to cancer.

Studies of energy medicines of various kinds have not generally yielded firm evidence of their effectiveness, and scientific medicine remains skeptical about all of its forms; but some studies of healers from various disciplines have shown that their hands emit much stronger electrical impulses than a typical person’s. Studies currently underway in China to assess the effectiveness of Qi Gong in treatment of conditions including cancer and heart disease suggest that it may be a powerful therapy."
