pilates

Pilates is a specialized, integrative system of exercise which can be used as part of a medical program. In addition to exercises which are designed to tone, strengthen and lengthen muscles without building up bulk, some of which require equipment unique to Pilates, it also incorporates various practices such as breathing exercises.

Pilates is geared toward the whole individual, looking at exercise from a mind and spirit as well as physical perspective. It was developed in the 1920s by Joseph H. Pilates, and has since become especially popular among dancers and other performers. It is also sometimes used as part of a physical therapy program to recover from injuries, or as an aid to the health and comfort of pregnant women.
