osteopathy
Osteopathy is a technique
of manipulation of the bones and joints of the body, developed in the
late 1800s by Dr. A. T. Still. It is similar to chiropractic but with
attention to the entire skeleton rather than focus on the spinal column.
Osteopathic physicians also work with the soft tissues; and since osteopaths
are also trained as medical doctors, they have a better understanding
of the whole body and how various conditions affect it.
Osteopathy is grounded in the concept of the interrelation between the
structural and physiological health of the body, and that improving the
health and functioning of the musculoskeletal system can improve health
overall. Treatment is also similar to chiropractic, but generally gentler,
and incorporating massage and manipulation of limbs and joints.
It is primarily used to treat joint pain and other musculoskeletal problems,
but is also used as a complement to treatment of asthma, migraines and
a number of other disorders.
