feldenkrais

Similar to the Alexander Method, Feldenkrais is a method of teaching better ways of moving. It was developed by Israeli engineer Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1940s and ‘50s as a way to deal with an old knee injury, incorporating his knowledge of biomechanics, Judo, and learning and human development.

The primary goal of the method is to teach greater awareness of one’s own body position and movements through simple exercises.

The system is divided into two types of instruction: Awareness Through Movement, taught to groups and consisting of sessions of light exercise guided by an instructor; and Functional Integration, or individual lessons in which the instructor encourages correct motion with gentle hand pressure.

It has proven very effective in helping people with movement impaired by injuries or strokes, and also benefits athletes and performers by encouraging awareness and creativity in use of the body, improving coordination and grace of movement.
