alexander technique

The Alexander Technique is a method of relieving various conditions through improvement of posture and habits of movement. It was developed by actor Frederick M. Alexander in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, working from his observation that poor posture leads to self-created tension which causes or contributes to back and neck pain, stiffness, stress, and other problems.

A practitioner observes the person’s posture and movement, then uses hand pressure to gently correct any problems by aligning the head, neck, back and limbs properly, which releases tension, as well as teaching a self-awareness of one’s tension-inducing habits.

In addition to back problems, the therapy has been useful for relief of breathing problems, repetitive stress injuries, arthritis and tension-related speaking problems, as well as general improvement of neuro-muscular coordination, making it popular among athletes and performers.
