acupressure
Developed in China
roughly 4000 years ago, acupressure, older than but similar in principal
to acupuncture, uses hand or finger pressure rather than needles to manipulate
the meridians or channels of energy flow through the body to treat pain,
stiffness, stress and a variety of other everyday discomforts.
The practitioner applies pressure to acupoints along the meridians, usually
between muscles, tendons or bones, in order to balance the Qi (chee).
It can also be used as a preventative therapy or in a complementary role
in treatment of major problems.
A variety of forms of acupressure have been developed, including Shiatsu,
Jin Shin Jiutsu and Jin Shin Do. It is simple to learn and understand,
and can be self-administered (although some points may be hard to reach),
and is therefore very useful for common ailments and inexpensive compared
to acupuncture, though acupuncture is generally considered more powerful
for treatment of more serious conditions.
