What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a progressive disease where the density of the bone is diminished, and the bone becomes porous, brittle and more prone to fractures. The spine, wrist and hips are most susceptible to fractures. As the bone density decreases, the vertebrae collapses and puts pressure on the nerves causing pain. Bone loss primarily affects women after menopause. It is estimated that half of all women between the ages of 45 and seventy five show signs of some degree of osteoporosis.

Cause

The exact cause of osteoporosis is unknown but it is attributed to age where a lack of estrogen production in postmenopausal women plays a significant role. Osteoporosis is also linked to some nutritional deficiencies more common in adults over 70 years of age or can be caused by long term use of certain medications.

Symptoms:

  • vetebral fractures
  • chronic lower back pain
  • muscle spasms during periods of inactivity
  • curve in the spine and loss of body height
  • breaks bones easily
  • tooth loss over the age of 50 or thinning of the bones that support the teeth

Prevention is key

Bone loss happens gradually and will progress without any early symptoms or warning signs. Prevention is a priority as it is easier to prevent osteoporosis than it is to try to reverse poor bone density or repair bone fractures. A health program consisting of weight bearing exercises and a good nutritional program can help to slow or even improve this condition.

Think About It....

  • Osteoporosis affects more than 28 million Americans and 1.4 million Canadians
  • In 1996 there were approximately 25,000 hip fractures in Canada and 300,000 in the US. Seventy percent of hip fractures are osteoporosis-related.
  • Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass in the first 5 - 7 years after menopause
  • One in four women over the age of 50 has osteoporosis. One in eight men over 50 also has the disease. However, the disease can strike at any age.
  • Osteoporosis can result in disfigurement, lowered self-esteem, reduction or loss of mobility, and decreased independence.
