What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the nervous system where the mylelin sheath covering the brain and spinal cord becomes damaged. This damage disrupts the transmission of nerve impulses causing a multitude of symptoms such as impaired vision, slurred speech, muscle tremors, staggering gait, impotence, incontinence, lack of balance and poor muscle coordination.

Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world. MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada. Every day, three more people in Canada are diagnosed with MS and women are twice as likely to develop MS as men.

The cause of MS is unknown. There is some speculation that MS may be linked to exposure of the Epstein-Barr virus or the measles or herpes virus but this has not been confirmed. Because MS is a chronic degenerative disease in which conventional medicine has no cure for, many Canadians explore complementary and alternative treatments in hope for remission and possibly a cure. Response to complementary and alternative treatments are highly individual and some people find them helpful, while others see no benefit at all. It is important to do your research, explore your options and share your information with your physician.

The Best Combination

The best treatment for multiple sclerosis has been the best of both conventional medicine and complementary medicine. We strongly recommend that you do not abandon conventional medicine in favor of an unproven complementary or alternative health practice.
