Cause

The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown but symptoms may be triggered by a physical or mental stress, inadequate sleep, an injury, exposure to dampness or cold or certain environmental chemicals, previous infections and occasionally rheumatoid arthritis.

Symptoms:

  • Sharp pain in the muscles and tissues is the most predominant symptom which can be aggravated by acitvity, stress, or weather conditions.
  • Sleeping difficulties, fatigue, headaches, numbness or tingling, change in body temperature, irritable bowel syndrome and mental fuzziness are also reported as well as a feeling like your body is disconnected.

Think About It....

  • Fibromyalgia affects two to four percent of Canadians.
  • 80% of people suffering from fibromyalgia are women between 20 - 50 years of age.
  • Fibromyalgia sufferers tend to have similar personality traits in that they tend to be overachievers, perfectionists, have endured prolonged stress, and/or are either anxious or depressed.
  • There is no cure for fibromyalgia.

The Best Combination

The best treatment for fibromyalgia has been the best of both conventional medicine and complementary medicine. We strongly recommend that you do not abandon conventional medicine in favor of an unproven complementary or alternative health practice.

With no cure from conventional medicine, many people with fibromyalgia search for pain relief with complementary and alternative medicine. While there is little research on many of the therapies, there are some practices that are offering some relief to fibromyalgia suffers while other therapies offer little or no relief from pain. It is important to do your research and find a therapy most suitable for you.
